PolicyMap, a digital humanities tool, supports the conference theme of the role and influence of technology in interprofessional health care through an innovative model of interprofessional health professionals’ education. As healthcare analytics becomes a prominent field,  health professional students' critical analysis skill and digital literacy are important for professional advancement.

The healthcare industry in the United States continues to face significant challenges in providing quality care to all. Healthy People 2020 encourages healthcare professionals to focus on the relevance of social determinants and health status in order to provide patient-centered care. Population health strategies coupled with the growth in data analytics provides a foundation for health professionals in exploring both health status and social determinants that may influence team-based healthcare. National datasets are available to all health professionals and allow for simple analysis across diverse variables. PolicyMap, a digital humanities tool, provides access to demographic, health and economic variables from which health professional students can identify populations at risk, select appropriate social determinants, epidemiological, and health status factors to gain insights of the role of interprofessional care within population health. For example, data that can be extrapolated from PolicyMap related to prescription opioid-overdose deaths and associated social determinates can be used to further support national health campaign and the role of the healthcare professional in managing pain and lead to the positive impact on uncontrolled mortalities resulting from opioid overdose.

Upon completion of this presentation, learners will be able to:

  • Describe PolicyMap, a digital humanities tool that can be used by academicians and clinicians in education and care delivery to explore social determinants of health
  • Explore PolicyMap as a tool to identify populations at risk that can benefit from health care initiatives and policy within the interprofessional healthcare practice to advance patient-centered care
  • Select social determinants, epidemiological, and health status factors, and visualize associated risks within population health that interprofessional health professional students can utilize to develop population health strategies to promote patient-centered care

Active Learning strategies

  • The workshop will engage participants to examine the digital tool, PolicyMap, using national datasets to examine key health variables that impact population health policy and delivery of care
  • Workshops participants will explore options for infusing digital analytics and data sets for local and national variables into interprofessional education programs for health science student to promote patient-centered care
