Conversation Cafés

Each year the National Center selects 4-5 IPE thorny issues for consideration as a Conversation Café at the Nexus Summit. Co-facilitators plan the café goals, outcomes, and structure with the National Center. Phase I cafés identify the issues, what is working and not working, and explore recommendations for action. Based upon the recommendations, the National Center determines whether the topic is ready for an Issues Champion to take it to the next level of analysis and development. The following is a summary of this year’s Conversation Cafés tackling big ideas across the Nexus of Practice and Education.

At the 2016 and 2017 Nexus Summit conversation cafes, we considered the “Big Question” of interprofessional clinical learning environments: “How do we help students, trainees, and practitioners gain the competencies to work in new models of care when we are still practicing in traditional models?” Increasingly, we recognize that as health professions students learn about and master the IPEC competencies during their early programs, it is vital that clinical and community sites are optimal interprofessional clinical learning environments to role model best interprofessional practices.

As the National Center has developed a track record of action and results on addressing challenging issues of interrofessional practice and education, it’s time to think around the next big rocks that need to be move – locally and nationally. During this café, the discussion will focus on identifying the issues, problems and barriers that should be the next areas for consideration and action by the National Center and AIHC to advance the field.

Are you a senior institutional leader who wants to know more about interprofessional practice and education (IPE)? Has your institution charged you with developing an institutional strategic plan for IPE or open an office/center to coordinate IPE? What do you think senior leaders and faculty need to know about developing a strategic approach to IPE? Your input is needed as we combine two 2016-2017 topics (institutional organizational models and IPE accreditation) to develop next steps to provide information about IPE to provosts, chancellors and deans.

What will health professions education in practice look like in 2025? What steps do we need to take to shape the future now? Join this café to help shape the national conversation about the Nexus by providing input to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education, a convener of over 50 national health professions organizations.

Is it possible to design “just the right clinical team” to achieve desired quality and cost outcomes? Healthcare organizations – from hospitals to community health centers – are experimenting with team composition and workflows to do just this. Recognizing the importance of these experiments to the future of interprofessional clinical practice, the National Center convened the first Conversation Café on Team Optimization in 2017 to understand and anticipate issues associated with designing clinical teams for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
