Learn With Purpose
Skills-based workshops are 90-minute active-learning sessions where attendees will gain actionable knowledge that pushes their interprofessional education further. At the workshops, attendees will be taught specific skills and/or competencies needed to go beyond IPE pilot models, create power teams for more effective and efficient care, and move their education and practice vision into action.

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP) have developed innovative interprofessional clinical education environments called Interprofessional Dedicated Education Units (IPDEUs). Health professional students rotate through hospital-based IPDEUs guided by Interprofessional Practice Instructors (IPIs) with the specific intent of learning the principles of interprofessional practice through active observation, modeling and robust facilitation and debriefing.

Developing expertise in IPE and interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in patient care is essential to educating healthcare professionals prepared to function effectively within today's emerging patient-centered healthcare teams. When disciplines work collaboratively, communication and teamwork are enhanced, thus improving quality of care (Institute of Medicine, 2015; Jennings, et al., 2016). But multiple barriers prevent IPE in ambulatory community settings, including limited space, fewer resources, and fewer disciplines and/or patients available at the same time.

When these influences are ignored, negative behaviors are encouraged that are in direct conflict with interprofessional practice competencies.
