On my 60th birthday last year I had surgery to re-attach my quadriceps tendon in both knees, the result of a fall down the stairs. Part of my recovery was to wear full length braces keeping my legs straight for three incredibly long months.
Despite my age and ample physique, I had been a very active person. The recovery was slow and, although I was able to work from home, my outlook felt bleak and depressing. I was not used to being dependent on others for help. I was not used to staying home day after day. Thank God for my family who did everything for me.
But the professionals who made such a difference in my life at the time were physical therapist, Lynn Lee, and her aide Jenna Smyth. They gently saw me through the removal of the braces, the exercises and training of my legs and slowly, the return to walking (without crutches or cane). More importantly, they sensed the deep darkness I had been experiencing and were so encouraging at each small success. You can't underestimate how badly I needed to feel forwarded momentum after languishing so long.
The image I sent shows the background of darkness I was feeling. The wheelchair, the crutches and braces felt that dark to me. The center part of the image was my last day at their office. They helped return the color to my life. For that I am so grateful. This is what the image looks like.
I regret this is not my finest work. But I wanted to honor Lynn and Jenna while I have the chance. You may see some of my other art here:
